English 9 – Intro

English 9 takes a beginning survey approach to the study of literature. Major literary terms are discussed in a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.  Grammatical concepts are integrated into writing narratives and term papers. Vocabulary and spelling skills are emphasized within the context of composition as well as directly in order to prepare the student for future studies. Composition skills studied range from the personal narrative to the formal research paper.

English 10 – World

English 10 studies major pieces in world literature in a cross-curricular approach. Major literary terms are discussed in a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.  Grammatical concepts are integrated into writing narratives and term papers. Vocabulary and spelling skills are emphasized within the context of composition as well as directly in order to prepare the student for future studies. Further attention is devoted to practicing composition skills from the personal narrative to the formal research paper and essay response.

English 11 – American

English 11 emphasizes American literature, using primary as well as secondary pieces. In a chronological fashion, major literary terms are discussed in a variety of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.  Grammatical concepts are integrated into writing narratives and term papers. Vocabulary and spelling skills are emphasized within the context of composition as well as directly in order to prepare the student for future studies. Further attention is devoted to practicing composition skills from the personal narrative to the formal research paper and essay response, as well as other forms of writing.

English 12 – British

English 12 emphasizes British literature, using primary as well as secondary pieces. AP English

By administrative approval only, students in AP English study a gamut of carefully selected pieces to further hone their studies of literature from the epics to dramatic pieces to the modern novel. Emphasis is devoted to the preparation of the student to take the Advanced Placement exam in the spring. The students will be expected to be proficient in composition and applied grammar skills, as well as have the ability to analyze entire bodies of literature within their historical context. Longer composition pieces will be expected from the students.
